Waste fishers

A waste fisher, is a person who physically collects marine or coastal waste as part of Ogyre’s Waste Collection Activities (see Ogyre Protocol for more details).

The term can refer to actual fishers who retrieve marine litter during Fishing for Litter operations, as well as local communities involved in the hands-on collection of waste in coastal areas.

In Ogyre’s model, waste fishers are not only operational actors. They are part of a wider human infrastructure for Ocean preservation, where coastal communities are supported in becoming active guardians of the sea. Their contribution to Ogyre’s Waste Collection Activities is recognized and remunerated, helping create economic  opportunities while generating environmental and social impact.

Within Ogyre’s approach, the role of waste fishers must be supported by fair, safe, and respectful working conditions, in line with the Ogyre Code of Conduct.
